student-athlete count soars as university welcomes largest class of student-athletes in at least 10 years

When students return to campus later this month, they will form one of the largest populations of student-athletes in Hamline’s 170-year history. For the Fall 2024 semester, expects about 30% of enrolled undergraduates to be active in athletics – a total of 499 student-athletes across 22 varsity .

Fueling this surge is a record-setting 160 first-year student-athletes – marking Hamline’s largest incoming student-athlete class in at least a decade. This addition is further bolstered by 23 transfer student-athletes joining this fall.

"Our coaches have worked extremely hard to recruit the right student-athletes to ,” said Alex Focke, athletic director and assistant vice president. “This class is not only a credit to our coaches and current student-athletes but to our entire campus. As we have talked about over the past year, success happens when we all win and this year, we were better together!"

Boasting an overall self-reported high school GPA of 3.46, the incoming class of student-athletes will be just as much a boon to academics as athletics, having proved their excellence in the classroom by receiving a multitude of academic honors and awards. Among the incoming class are valedictorians, members, honors students, class presidents, , a recipient, an and recipient and a scholar.

Hard work and dedication in the classroom has paved the way for these student-athletes to be driven and decorated in their athletic pursuits. Among Hamline’s incoming first year students-athletes, there are state champions, high school winners, a semi-finalist, high school winners, all-conference and all-section award winners and all-state nominees.

As Pipers, they will take to the field, ice, court, and more on 22 varsity teams, 20 of which compete in the .
